Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: A Divine Journey to the Abode of Lord Shiva
The Mount Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the world's most sacred and spiritually enriching pilgrimages, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Bon tradition. Nestled in the remote Himalayas of Tibet, Mount Kailash is believed to be the eternal abode of Lord Shiva, where he resides in deep meditation with Goddess Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas. This majestic peak, also known as Kailash Parvat, is considered the spiritual center of the universe and a symbol of divine power and enlightenment.
Spiritual Significance of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar
Mount Kailash
Standing at an elevation of 6,638 meters, Mount Kailash is regarded as one of the holiest mountains on Earth. Hindus worship it as the sacred dwelling place of Lord Shiva, while Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers consider it a powerful spiritual site. The mountain is often referred to as the "Axis Mundi" or the center of the world, representing the connection between heaven and earth.
Lake Mansarovar
Situated near Mount Kailash, the pristine Lake Mansarovar is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. According to Hindu mythology, the lake was created in the mind of Lord Brahma. Pilgrims believe that bathing in its sacred waters or drinking from the lake purifies the soul and washes away the sins of many lifetimes, bringing inner peace and spiritual renewal.
The Sacred Pilgrimage: Parikrama or Kora
One of the most significant aspects of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the circumambulation of Mount Kailash. Hindus refer to this sacred journey as the Parikrama, while Tibetans call it the Kora. The pilgrimage involves trekking around the holy mountain in a clockwise direction, covering approximately 52 kilometers.
Despite the physical challenges of high altitude and rugged terrain, pilgrims undertake this sacred trek with unwavering devotion and faith. Completing the Parikrama is believed to bestow spiritual merit, purify karma, and lead devotees toward liberation and enlightenment.

Kathmandu–China Border Round Trip
Primary Border Routes
Currently, the most commonly used border crossings for the round trip from Kathmandu to Tibet are:
Rasuwagadhi (Nepal) – Kerung/Gyirong (Tibet, China)
The Rasuwagadhi–Kerung (Gyirong) route is currently the primary and most active overland gateway between Nepal and Tibet for both tourists and cargo transportation. The Tibetan border town of Kerung (Gyirong) is located approximately 15 km from the Nepal–China border and serves as the main entry point for travelers heading to Tibet and Mount Kailash.
Tatopani (Nepal) – Zhangmu (Tibet, China)
Historically known as the Kodari route, the Tatopani–Zhangmu border crossing was once the main overland route connecting Nepal and Tibet. However, following the devastating 2015 earthquake, this border crossing has remained largely restricted to cargo and official transportation, making it currently inaccessible to foreign tourists.
