Trip Overview

The Bhotekoshi River Rafting 1 Day trip is Nepal's ultimate short white-water adventure, an intense, action-packed descent of the steepest commercially rafted river in the country. The Bhotekoshi, whose name simply means “the river from Tibet,” thunders down from the Himalayan border through a deep, narrow gorge in the Sindhupalchok district north-east of Kathmandu, dropping so steeply that its rapids come one after another in an almost continuous ribbon of white water.

The adventure begins with an early morning departure from Kathmandu, driving north-east along the historic Araniko Highway, the old trade route to Lhasa, as it climbs through terraced hills and river gorges toward the Tibetan border. At the riverside put-in, our senior river guides deliver a comprehensive safety briefing and paddle training session, because on this river every crew member counts, before easing into the current on a warm-up stretch.

Then the gradient kicks in. For the next couple of hours, your raft charges through a relentless sequence of technical Class III-IV rapids, with waves crashing over the bow, your guide shouting rapid-fire commands, and safety kayakers dancing through the white water alongside. Rapids with names like Frog in a Blender and Gerbil in the Plumbing tell you everything you need to know about the character of this river; steep, bouncy, technical, and utterly exhilarating from start to finish.

After the take-out near the Sunkoshi confluence area at Lamosangu, a well-earned riverside lunch is served before the return drive to Kathmandu, where you arrive by early evening. Adrenaline lovers can extend the day into a weekend by combining the rafting with the famous 160m bungee jump or canyon swing at the nearby gorge, one of the highest in the world.

The best seasons are autumn (September-December) and spring (March-May), when water levels produce thrilling but manageable Class III-IV white water; during the monsoon the upper river becomes too powerful for commercial trips. While fit and adventurous first-timers are welcome, the Bhotekoshi is best suited to those looking for a serious adrenaline hit rather than a gentle float. Whether you are searching for the Bhotekoshi rafting cost, itinerary, difficulty level, or best season, this one-day trip delivers the most intense white-water experience available anywhere near Kathmandu.

Transportation & River Access Information

Drive to the Put-In Point

The trip begins with a scenic drive of around 3 hours (approximately 95km) from Kathmandu along the Araniko Highway, which winds north-east through the hills of Sindhupalchok toward the Tibetan border, following first the Indrawati and then the Bhotekoshi itself. The put-in point is selected by our guides on the day according to water levels, typically in the upper gorge section of the river.

Returning from the Trip

The run finishes downstream near Lamosangu, close to where the Bhotekoshi becomes the Sunkoshi, and the return drive to Kathmandu takes around 2.5-3 hours, arriving back in the city by early evening.

A Compact, High-Intensity Adventure

Because the Bhotekoshi packs its gradient into such a short stretch of river, the entire adventure fits comfortably into a single day from Kathmandu with no camping or remote logistics required. For those wanting more, the trip combines superbly with the nearby 160m bungee jump and canyon swing, or can be extended into a two-day trip with an overnight stay at a riverside resort.

Detailed Itinerary

Trek DistanceN/A

Highest Altitude1,355m / 4,446ft
Trek DurationN/A

Early Morning: Departure from Kathmandu

After an early breakfast, we depart Kathmandu at around 6:00-6:30 AM and drive north-east along the Araniko Highway, the historic trade route to Tibet, passing through Dhulikhel and the hills of Sindhupalchok as the road drops into the dramatic Bhotekoshi gorge. The drive of around 3 hours brings us to the riverside put-in point.

Late Morning: Safety Briefing & Warm-Up

At the river, our senior guides fit you with a helmet, life jacket, and paddle, and deliver an extended safety briefing and paddle-training session; on a river this steep, crisp teamwork matters, so we practice the commands until every crew is sharp. A short warm-up stretch lets you find your rhythm before the gradient begins.

Midday: Non-Stop White-Water Action

Then the Bhotekoshi shows its true character. For roughly two hours the rapids come thick and fast, a nearly continuous staircase of technical Class III-IV white water, with legendary drops such as Frog in a Blender and Gerbil in the Plumbing keeping your heart rate high and your paddle busy. Safety kayakers shadow the rafts through every rapid, and between the biggest drops the sheer walls, waterfalls, and jungle scenery of the gorge provide a spectacular backdrop, if you can spare a second to look up.

Afternoon: Riverside Lunch & Take-Out

We take out near Lamosangu, where the Bhotekoshi joins the Sunkoshi drainage, change into dry clothes, and celebrate the descent over a delicious riverside lunch prepared by our crew.

Evening: Return to Kathmandu

We arrive back in Kathmandu by early evening, bringing your Bhotekoshi River Rafting adventure with Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition to a close. If you would like to pair the rafting with the nearby 160m bungee jump, canyon swing, or an overnight riverside resort stay, we are happy to arrange an extended program.

Bhotekoshi River Rafting – 1 Day — Important Trip Info

Your Bhotekoshi River Rafting trip begins in Kathmandu, the bustling capital of Nepal. Most international travelers land at Tribhuvan International Airport, and the rafting day departs directly from the city, with the river gorge lying around 95km to the north-east along the Araniko Highway.

Our team will assist with pick-up arrangements, final preparations, and a short pre-trip briefing. We recommend booking the rafting day at least one day after your arrival in Nepal, so you are well rested for the early morning departure and the physical demands of the river.

This is a day trip with no overnight stays involved. Pick-up is arranged from your hotel in Kathmandu (typically in or around Thamel) or from our office in the early morning, and you are returned to the city by early evening. For those wishing to add the nearby 160m bungee jump, canyon swing, or a night at a riverside resort, we can arrange a two-day program with an overnight stay in the gorge.

Bhotekoshi means “the river from Tibet” in Nepali, and the river descends directly from the Himalayan border at Kodari, following the line of the ancient Kathmandu-Lhasa trade route that is today the Araniko Highway. For centuries this corridor carried salt, wool, and grain between Nepal and Tibet, and the river valley remains one of the most historic in the country.

Commercial rafting reached the Bhotekoshi in the 1990s, when Nepal's pioneering river companies pushed beyond the Trishuli in search of steeper water and quickly recognized the upper gorge as the most intense raftable run in the country. The river has since weathered dramatic events, including the 2015 earthquake and subsequent floods that reshaped parts of the valley, yet it remains the benchmark against which every adrenaline-seeking paddler in Nepal measures a day of white water. Today, its short, steep run and quirkily named rapids enjoy near-legendary status among rafters and kayakers worldwide.

The Bhotekoshi rises on the Tibetan plateau and crosses into Nepal at Kodari, cutting a deep, narrow gorge south through the Sindhupalchok district before merging into the Sunkoshi near Lamosangu. It is the upper reach of the great Koshi river system that ultimately drains much of eastern Nepal. The commercially rafted section drops at roughly ten times the gradient of the lower Sun Koshi, squeezing continuous Class III-IV rapids into a short stretch of boulder-choked river between steep, jungle-clad walls.

Major Geographical Highlights

•         The Bhotekoshi Gorge – a deep, narrow canyon of cliffs, waterfalls, and dense green hillsides carrying the river down from the border.

•         Class III-IV Rapids – an almost continuous staircase of technical white water, including the famous Frog in a Blender and Gerbil in the Plumbing.

•         Araniko Highway – the historic Kathmandu-Lhasa trade route that follows the river, providing easy road access to the whole run.

•         Kodari / Tatopani – the border area at the head of the valley, known for its hot springs and Friendship Bridge to Tibet.

•         The 160m Suspension Bridge – site of one of the world's highest bungee jumps and canyon swings, spanning the gorge near the river.

•         Lamosangu – the take-out area where the Bhotekoshi feeds the Sunkoshi, gateway to the great rivers of eastern Nepal.

The Bhotekoshi is a steep, technical, high-consequence river, and it demands the very best in professional river leadership. Every raft is captained by a senior, government-licensed guide, and safety kayakers accompany every departure.

•         River Safety – guides read the fast, technical water, scout key rapids, and choose the safest lines through every drop.

•         Expert Instruction – an extended paddle-training session ensures every crew responds instantly to commands where split seconds matter.

•         Safety Kayakers – expert kayakers shadow the rafts through every rapid, positioned to assist swimmers within moments.

•         Rescue Training – all guides are trained in swift-water rescue and first aid, with throw ropes and rescue equipment on every raft.

•         Water-Level Judgment – guides assess the river daily and adjust the put-in, program, or timing to match safe, enjoyable conditions.

A freshly prepared lunch is served riverside after the run, prepared by our crew with hygiene as the top priority, and it always tastes better with a healthy dose of post-rapids adrenaline.

Typical Lunch Options

•         Sandwiches, fried rice, or noodles with fresh vegetables

•         Seasonal salads and fresh fruits

•         Eggs, potatoes, and light snacks

•         Tea, coffee, and juice

Safe drinking water is provided throughout the day. Breakfast and dinner are not included, allowing you to eat at your own pace in Kathmandu before departure and after your return.

The Bhotekoshi is a genuinely challenging river, and while our safety systems make it a well-managed adventure, participants should understand that this is a step up from gentle introductory rafting. The main considerations relate to the power of the water, the cold glacial temperature, and physical readiness.

Key Safety & Health Points

•         High-buoyancy life jackets and helmets are worn at all times on the water, and wetsuits are provided year-round for the cold glacial water.

•         Basic swimming ability and confidence in moving water are strongly recommended for this river.

•         Listen carefully during the extended safety briefing and respond instantly to your guide's commands in the rapids.

•         Be honest about your fitness, experience, and any medical conditions when booking; the trip is not suitable during pregnancy or for those with serious heart or joint conditions.

•         Sun reflects strongly off the water; use waterproof sunscreen and secure sunglasses with a strap.

Safety kayakers accompany every trip, a first aid kit and full rescue equipment are carried on every raft, and the highway beside the river allows rapid access to medical facilities if ever needed.

Autumn (September-December)

•         Post-monsoon flows gradually dropping from powerful to playful

•         Warm, stable weather and superb gorge scenery

•         The most popular season for the Bhotekoshi

Spring (March-May)

•         Rising snowmelt brings the rapids back to life after winter

•         Warm days ideal for getting splashed

•         An excellent second season for the river

Winter (December-February)

•         Lower, technical water levels and crisp, clear days

•         Cold glacial water managed comfortably with the full wetsuits and splash jackets we provide

During the monsoon (June-August), the upper Bhotekoshi rises to dangerous levels and commercial trips on the steep section are suspended; our team assesses water levels daily in every season and always errs on the side of safety.

Commercial rafting on the Bhotekoshi requires rafting permits arranged through the relevant authorities, and all trips must be led by licensed river guides. Permit fees are set by the Nepal government and local authorities and may change periodically; all permits are arranged by our office in Kathmandu, so you simply need to bring yourself and your sense of adventure.

•         Swimwear or quick-drying shorts and a t-shirt to wear under the wetsuit

•         Secure sandals with heel straps or old sneakers (no flip-flops)

•         A full change of dry clothes and a towel for after the trip

•         A warm layer for the drive home, especially in autumn and winter

•         Waterproof sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses with a retaining strap

•         A waterproof camera or GoPro with a secure mount if you wish to capture the action (optional)

•         A small amount of cash for drinks and snacks en route

This trip is graded moderate to challenging and is aimed at fit, adventurous participants. No previous rafting experience is strictly required, but you should be in good general health, physically active, comfortable in water, and ready to paddle hard on command for sustained bursts. Basic swimming ability is strongly recommended. The minimum recommended age is around 15-16 years, and participants who have enjoyed the Trishuli and want the next level will find the Bhotekoshi the perfect step up. If you are unsure whether the river suits you, our team is happy to advise honestly based on the season and water levels.

The Manaslu trek is incomparable. It's suitable as a first trek in the Himalayas — plenty of time for acclimatisation and such captivating views that spending time on "altitude sickness" would be a pity. And it's a special pleasure to walk with Krishna. He is a knowledgeable, reliable and brave guide, and a very pleasa…
