Guidelines for Safe and Secure Travel in Nepal

Traveling in Nepal is generally safe and highly rewarding, but it requires proper preparation due to the country’s unique geography and local conditions. Travelers should ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance that includes high-altitude trekking and emergency medical evacuation. It is also important to stay hydrated, respect local customs, and keep emergency contacts readily available.

1. Trekking and Mountain Safety

  • Do not trek alone: Always hire a licensed guide or travel with a reputable trekking agency.
  • Acclimatization: Altitude sickness is a serious risk in the Himalayas. Ascend gradually, drink plenty of fluids, and consult a doctor about preventive medication such as Diamox (Acetazolamide).
  • Permits: Make sure all required trekking permits and TIMS cards are arranged before starting your journey.
  • Preparation: Mountain weather changes quickly, so carry waterproof layers, warm clothing, and a fully charged power bank.

2. Health and Hygiene

  • Water safety: Avoid drinking tap water. Use bottled, boiled, or properly filtered water.
  • Vaccinations: Consult a travel clinic for recommended vaccines such as Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, and Japanese Encephalitis.
  • First-aid kit: Carry basic medicines, including anti-diarrheal and altitude-related medication if advised.
  • Wildlife safety: Rabies is present in Nepal, so avoid contact with stray dogs and wild animals.
  • Mosquito protection: In lowland areas like the Terai, protect yourself from mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria by using repellent and covering skin.

3. Personal Security and Scams

  • Protect valuables: Use hotel safes for passports and cash; carry only essentials when outside.
  • Night safety: Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas and travel with companions when possible.
  • Transport caution: Use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and ensure vehicles are safe for mountain roads.

4. Emergency Contacts and Registration

  • Tourist Police (Nepal): Dial 1144 or 100 for assistance.
  • Embassy registration: Register with your embassy upon arrival for added safety and support during emergencies.
