Kathmandu Tour – 1 Day — Important Trip Info
Kathmandu can be visited throughout the year, though the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures are generally found during autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May). The monsoon season (June-August) brings afternoon rain showers, while winter (December-February) is cool but generally dry and pleasant for sightseeing.
As the tour includes visits to active religious sites, modest clothing covering the shoulders and knees is recommended out of respect for local customs. Comfortable walking shoes are advisable, as some areas involve walking on uneven stone surfaces or climbing steps, particularly at Swayambhunath.
• Remove your shoes before entering temple interiors where required.
• Ask permission before photographing people, particularly at Pashupatinath, where cremation ceremonies may be taking place.
• Walk clockwise around stupas and mani walls, following local Buddhist tradition.
• Dress modestly and avoid public displays of affection at religious sites.
• Non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the main inner sanctum of Pashupatinath Temple, though the surrounding complex is open to all visitors.
Kathmandu Durbar Square
One of three durbar squares in the Kathmandu Valley, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was the ceremonial and administrative center of the former Malla and Shah dynasties, with palaces and temples dating back several centuries.
Swayambhunath
Believed to be over 1,500 years old, Swayambhunath is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world, with its iconic golden spire and painted eyes watching over the Kathmandu Valley.
Pashupatinath Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Pashupatinath is the most important Hindu temple in Nepal and one of the holiest Shiva temples in the world, drawing pilgrims from across South Asia, particularly during the Maha Shivaratri festival.
Boudhanath Stupa
One of the largest stupas in the world, Boudhanath has been a key stop on the trade route between Tibet and the Kathmandu Valley for centuries and remains the spiritual heart of the city’s large Tibetan refugee community.
This tour is suitable for travelers of most ages and fitness levels, though Swayambhunath does involve climbing a long set of stone steps (an alternative route by road to the rear entrance can be arranged for those with mobility concerns).
