Trip Overview

The Lumbini Tour offers a meaningful and peaceful journey to the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who became known to the world as the Buddha. Located in the southern plains of Nepal near the Indian border, Lumbini is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and remains one of the four most sacred pilgrimage sites in Buddhism, drawing visitors from around the world for both spiritual reflection and cultural discovery.

The tour begins with your arrival in Lumbini, either by a short flight to Gautam Buddha International Airport in nearby Bhairahawa or by road from Kathmandu or Pokhara. After checking in to your hotel, the first afternoon is spent exploring the Sacred Garden, the historic and spiritual heart of Lumbini, where the Maya Devi Temple marks the precise spot of the Buddha’s birth, alongside the ancient Ashoka Pillar, the Sacred Pond, and a grove of centuries-old trees.

On the second day, a full day is dedicated to the wider Monastic Zone, a planned area stretching roughly three kilometers north of the Sacred Garden and divided into the East Monastic Zone (Theravada tradition) and the West Monastic Zone (Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions). Here, more than thirty countries and Buddhist organizations have built monasteries in their own distinct architectural styles, offering a fascinating, walkable comparison of Buddhist traditions from across Asia. The day concludes at the World Peace Pagoda, a striking Japanese-built stupa at the northern end of the zone, before your onward journey.

Lumbini can be visited comfortably throughout the year, with autumn (September-November) offering the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures, and winter (December-February) bringing a peaceful, atmospheric mist in the early mornings. This tour is well suited to travelers of any background, whether visiting as a Buddhist pilgrim or simply as a curious traveler interested in history, architecture, and quiet reflection.

Whether you are searching for the Lumbini tour itinerary, Maya Devi Temple opening hours, or the best way to combine a visit to Lumbini with the rest of your Nepal trip, this tour offers a complete and respectful introduction to the birthplace of the Buddha.

The Manaslu trek is incomparable. It's suitable as a first trek in the Himalayas — plenty of time for acclimatisation and such captivating views that spending time on "altitude sickness" would be a pity. And it's a special pleasure to walk with Krishna. He is a knowledgeable, reliable and brave guide, and a very pleasa…
