Lower Dolpo Trek is one of the most unique and rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal, offering an adventure into the heart of the Dolpo Region. Located in the western part of Nepal, the region is known for its remote beauty, untouched by the crowds that visit other popular trekking destinations in Nepal. The trek leads you to the serene Shey Phoksundo Lake, a stunning blue lake situated at 3,611 meters above sea level. Shey Phoksundo Lake is surrounded by dramatic hills and is a part of Shey-Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park. The lake, along with the towering Mt. Kanjiroba, creates a truly mesmerizing landscape.
The Lower Dolpo Trek is deeply influenced by Tibetan culture. As you trek through the region, you’ll encounter traditional villages where people continue to live much as they did centuries ago. The trek allows you to explore ancient monasteries, as well as the Bon Po and Chaiba cultures, which predate Buddhism. These spiritual practices are still an integral part of life in the region. Every year, hundreds of pilgrims gather near Phoksundo Lake to take part in religious festivals, adding to the cultural richness of the area.
One of the highlights of the trek is the stunning views of the Himalaya in Nepal, with snow-capped peaks like Annapurna (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Api (7,132 m), and Nilgiri. The landscape also offers breathtaking views of arid alpine terrain, giving trekkers a truly off-the-beaten-path experience. The Lower Dolpo Treks are known for their challenging terrain, with high passes and steep slopes, but they are also among the Best Treks in Nepal for those looking to experience remote beauty and traditional cultures.
Although Lower Dolpo Trekking is considered one of the more challenging treks in Nepal due to its high altitude and rough terrain, it does not require prior trekking experience. However, trekkers should be in good physical condition and have the stamina for long days of walking. The best time to trek is from March to May and August to October, with the monsoon season being less of a concern in this region due to the area’s location in the rain shadow.
The trek itself is a journey through various landscapes and cultures, ranging from the terraced fields of Dunai to the high mountain passes of Numa La (5,190 m) and Baga La (5,070 m). The 18-day Lower Dolpo Trekking Itinerary starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and then another flight to Juphal, the starting point of the trek. From Juphal, the trek begins with a hike to Dunai, followed by visits to villages like Tarakot, Laini, and Nawarpani, offering beautiful views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna. The trek continues to Dho Tarap, where trekkers can take a rest day to acclimatize and experience the local community.
The trek then crosses the Numa La Pass and Baga La Pass, offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains. You’ll then reach Ringmo Village and the beautiful Shey Phoksundo Lake, where you will spend a day enjoying the tranquil surroundings.
